The Bono region has recorded the highest HIV prevalence with 2.12 per cent in 2023, far exceeding the National prevalence rate of 1.53 per cent.

The Bono region currently has 18,564 population of persons Living with HIV, according to the 2023 data from the Ghana AIDS Commission (GAC) in Bono region.

The data revealed that Greater Accra recorded the second highest with 1.98 per cent.

Eastern Region had 1.95 per cent on the third position of the table, followed by Western North with 1.82 per cent, Ahafo with 1.79 per cent and Ashanti Region 1.70 per cent prevalence respectively.

North East and Northern Regions recorded the lowest prevalence rate with 0.43 and 0.38 per cent respectively in the 2023 HIV data.

Mr. Ahmed Ibrahim Bimbilla, the Bono East, Ahafo and Bono Regions Technical Coordinator, Ghana AIDS Commission disclosed at a stakeholders engagement in Sunyani.

The engagement was organized by the GAC on Wednesday to make the data available to stakeholders for stringent actions towards mitigating the alarming figures.

It was attended by the Regional Minister, Chiefs, the media and Civil Society Organizations into HIV response activities.

Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Bono Regional Minister, in her opening remarks stated that HIV and AIDS remains a public health threat to the region. 

She worried that improper parental care was amongst the contributing factors to the increasing cases of the HIV AIDS.

Mad. Owusu-Banahene therefore implored parents to supervise activities and movement of their children at home and on social media, and advised the general public to repackage their lifestyle not to victims of HIV AIDS.

Seven Regions recorded below 10,000 population of Persons Living with HIV in 2023, and they are Ahafo with 7,140, Upper East with 6,954, Upper West with 5,518.

Northern Region recorded 5,453, Oti had 5,381 population, Savannah had 2,853 and North East recorded the least HIV AIDS population of 1,689 in the year 2023.
