Malaria Cases down in Sunyani Municipality

The Sunyani Municipality has witnessed reduction in malaria cases between the year 2021 and 2023, Mr. Mansur Zacharia Mohamed, the malaria focal person for the Municipality stated in an interview.

According to him, though one person died out of malaria in 2022 when malaria was leading the top 10 OPD cases in the Municipality.

But, as a result of strengthened preventative interventions undertaken by the Ghana Health Services (GHS), the Municipality recorded no death of malaria in 2023.

Mr. Zacharia Mohamed told News that there has been over 5000 reduction in cases of malaria in the years under review. 

Mr. Zacharia Mohamed explained in the year 2020, the Municipality recorded a total of 46,915 malaria cases and declined to 43,611 cases in 2021.

In 2022, the Municipality made progress in reduction to 38,972 cases of malaria and in 2023, the recorded cases were 41,273.

The figures clearly indicate a marginal reduction of 5,642 cases of malaria between 2020 and 2023, he stated.

Mr. Zacharia Mohamed noted with the citizens adherence to the preventive measures by the GHS, Ghana would see drastic reduction in cases of malaria if not total eradication.

He therefore amplified the announcement of the ongoing mosquito nets distribution exercise from Thursday 23 to Monday, 27 May 2024.

The Municipal malaria focal person said there were 52,743 registered households with 119,350 people registered to get the insecticide treated mosquito net.

Mr. Zacharia Mohamed said a total of 1,633 people in the Municipality refused to register for the net with diverse reasons.
