SYDA to build creche to absorb children of apprentices in Sunyani
Sunyani, September 21, 2023
Discussions are underway for the Sunyani Youth Development Association (SYDA) to build a creche to absorb children of trainees of the Association and apprentices in the Sunyani Municipality.
This was announced at the SYDA’s second graduation ceremony on Tuesday at the Association’s Skills Training Cnetre in Sunyani.
Absorbing such children would help free the single teenage mothers to concentrate on their apprenticeship training to become productive.
In a speech, Mr. Atta Akoto Senior, President of SYDA said “this would ensure that mothers of these kids are economically empowered whiles their children also get quality education from the onset”, citing (SDG Goals 8 and 4 respectively).
Touching on some major challenges facing the Association, Mr. Akoto Snr said most interested trainees particularly the single mothers lack support from their families, but the Association also lack the means to retain them, hence the creche.
“So far about 19 trainees were forced to quit because it was difficult for them to undergo their training while attending to their babies”, he worried.
This challenge caused SYDA to engage some people and organizations to help reverse the problem, he added.
Currently, there are 42 trainees undergoing training under 10 Master Crafts Persons in Hairdressing, Auto Mechanic, Bead Crafts, Cosmetology, Fashion, Kente weaving and Smock weaving.
