Pupil of basic schools in the Sunyani West Municipality have been sensitized and given menstrual hygiene education as part of effort to psychologically empower them to stay and focus in class even when menstruating.

The one-day menstrual hygiene education by adolescent reproductive health professionals and dietitians was held at the Presbyterian Church (Peace Congregation) at Nsuatre.

It was to mark this year’s World Menstrual Hygiene Day in the area and contribute to ending Period Poverty.

As part of the event, 2000 pieces of sanitary pads were distributed to the pupil under the auspices of Lawyer Amma Frimpomaa Dwumah, a Lawyer from Sunyani Odumase, the Municipal capital in collaboration with the Sunyani West Municipal Education Directorate in the Bono region.

In an interview with thefourlens.com after the donation, Lawyer Frimpomaa reiterated with worry that luxury taxes on sanitary products makes it difficult for adolescent girls and women to access sanitary pad during their menstrual period.

The lack of access to affordable sanitary pads and sanitary products, menstrual hygiene facilities, education on menstruation is affecting many girls and women during menstruation.

They thereby resort to using rags and toilet paper due to inability to afford sanitary pads because a sanitary pad cost more than Ghc18, she noted.

Saying, most young girls end up becoming pregnant because they need money for sanitary pads and that could lead to unsafe abortions.

She pleaded with government to remove taxes on sanitary pads and make it free so that children at their menstrual cycle can always access the product for their healthy living.

Lawyer Frimpomaa in that regard advocates for reusable sanitary pads production to end “Period Poverty”, particularly in the rural communities.

In further development, Mr. Issah Bafoe, the Sunyani West Municipal Director of Education urged parents and guardians to keep eye on their children and lead the education on menstrual hygiene at their homes.
