President Nana Akuffo-Addo Has Commissioned The Sunyani Airport To Commence Domestic Flights Operations

The President of the Republic, Nana Addo Dankwa Akuffo-Addo, on Wednesday commissioned the phase one of the Sunyani Airport, to pave way for domestic flights to commence commercial operations.

Speaking at the ceremony,  President Nana Akuffo-Addo was optimistic the reopening of the airport would promote trade and ecotourism in the beneficiary regions and the country at large.

He said an amount of GH¢52.25m was pumped into the rehabilitation project to provide a functional air travel and business opportunities not only in the Bono region, but Bono East, Ahafo, Westhern,  Savannah regions and neighboring countries.

The Sunyani airport was originally constructed as an airstrip, later in 1969, it was upgraded into an airport.

In 2015, the Ghana Airport Company Limited (GACL) and the Ghana Civil Aviation Authority (GCAA) shut down the airport as a precautionary measure to prevent any disaster.

The rehabilitation works for the expansion began in 2019 and the first phase of that project had been completed to pave way for domestic flight operations.

President Nana Akuffo-Addo Commissioned the facility together with Chiefs in the Bono region and stakeholders in the Transport and Aviation industry. 

Mr. Kwaku Ofori Asiamah,  the Minister for Transport, expressed delightment the project close for nearly five years currently has a total runway length of about 1,520 metres and would be handed over to the Ghana Civil Aviation for effective operations.

He stated the GCAA, GACL and other stakeholders in the entire Transport and Aviation industry has successfully conducted test, inspected and certified the Sunyani airport and has assured the facility was fit for domestic airlines operations.

Passion Air has finalized modalities to start operations to and from Sunyani, Mr. Asiamah said.

Madam Justina Owusu-Banahene, the Bono Regional Minister earlier in her welcome address stated the airport would revive and boost economic activities as well as employment opportunities in the region and the country at large.

Mad. Owusu-Banahene notes the airport would also promote eco- cultural tourism in the Bono and other neighbouring regions and promote middle belt development in agricultural, industrial and commercial businesses.

Mrs. Pamela Djamson-Tettey, the Managing Director, Ghana Airport Company Limited said the Ghana airport Company saw the need to close down the facility to prevent disaster that may have occurred and expressed confident the phase two of the project would commence soon.

She was optimistic her office would turn Ghana into international aviation business hub in the sub regions of Africa to expand Ghana and the continent’s socioeconomic activities.

Osagyefo Oseadeayo Agyemang Badu II, President of the Bono Regional House Chiefs commended President Nana Akuffo-Addo for reactivating the Sunyani Airport to improve economic activities in the region.

Oseadeayo Agyemang Badu II reinterated road networks in the region was a worrying situation, citing the New Dormaa Yawhima road and pleaded with President Nana Akuffo-Addo to ensure the contractors come back in site to complete such deteriorated road projects.
