Wenchi determined to get Premier and Division One Leagues Clubs – MP

Wenchi (B/R), August 02, thefourlens.com – Opinion leaders in Wenchi begin move to get Traditional football clubs they would call ‘Wenchiaman’ football clubs to compete the Ghana Premier and Division One leagues from 2023, Mr. Haruna Seidu, the Member of Parliament (MP) said.

The MP worried that “Wenchi is made of many young football talents, but does not have a Premier club to build and expose the players to the Ghana National team and foreign clubs”.

He stated his Office was therefore committed to collaborate with Chiefs, Assembly members, the Municipal Chief Executive, the sports development directorate and youth groups to do all things necessary for the town to have traditional clubs from 2023 football season.

Mr. Seidu was speaking in an interview with thefourlens.com over the weekend in Wench, on the sideline of an inter community football tournament to prepare young footballers in that regard.

The maiden two-day tournament dubbed “Awhiniekoko” cup was organized by the Municipal Sports development unit under the auspices of the Assembly and saw 10 participating communities.

Mr. Seidu said Asamoah Gyan was the heart of Ghana Black Star, hence expressed high level commitment to support young and talented sporting individuals in the area to reach the likes of Asamoah Gyan, Felix Ohene Afena-Gyan. 

“It was in this regard that we organized Easter and Ramadan gala as well as this tournament to give the players opportunities to exhibit their God given talents and be selected and get them fully prepared”, adding the next edition of the tournament in December this year would begin the picking of the required players for the ‘Wenchiman’ FC.

He commended the Municipal sports development committee for the initiative and assured they would continue to put heads together and mobilize needed resources to facilitate and speed up works to make it a dream-come-through.

Mr. Seidu supported the tournament with a trophy for the winning team, two footballs and an undisclosed cash amount for participants.

Mr. Alexander Obour Damoah, the MCE in further interview said Authorities in Wenchi were working for the completion of a befitting sports complex to help them register their name in the Ghana Premier league.
